Title: The Negotiator Author: Psycho!Scully E-Mail: PsychoScully14@aol.com Disclaimer: As usual, Fox Mulder, Dana Scully, Walter Skinner and all the other characters of "The X-Files" do not belong to me, they belong to CC and 1013 productions. Also, I hope that F. Gary Gray (the director of "The Negotiator") doesn't mind that I'm using his ideas for this story. Distribution: Anywhere, just e-mail me first. Summary: A negotiation deal. With Fox Mulder doing the negotiating. Category: A dash of MulderAngst maybe? Author's Note: **WARNING!** This is definitely NOT a Mulder/Scully romance. It does have some UST in the beginning, but this is not your typical, Scully saves the day story. I won't reveal anymore. Now it's up to you to read the story. :0) Also, this does include some violence. Not graphic though. This is the first time I've written a MulderAngst story. So please, be gentle. I break easily. :0) Now...on with the negotiations... ****************************************************************************= J. Edgar Hoover Building Monday, September 6th 8:08 AM The sounds of clapping and laughter were heard throughout the Hoover building. The celebrations were for Agent Casey McMurry and Agent Tom Colton. Both agents successfully ended the largest drug bust of the century. Special agent Fox Mulder finally reached his domain. The basement. Sure, no one ever liked to come down and socialize with him. But that's what Mulder liked about it. Privacy. The sound of the phone ringing brought Mulder out of his thoughts. Picking up the phone he calmly answered, "Mulder." "Hey buddy! Why aren't ya up here partyin' with us?" It was agent McMurry. "I have to finish the expense report of our last case." "Okay, but hey, at least tell me you're going to make it to my party tonight." Debating, Mulder finally answered, "Sure." Hanging up the phone, Mulder grabbed his coat. Sure, he needed to go to that party. *^*^*^*^*^* Casey McMurry Residence 11:56 PM Through the loud music, and swarms of fellow colleagues, Mulder and Colton made their way to the backyard. Scully noticed the two men, and decided to chat. Mulder thought. Mulder caught a glimpse at Colton. "Just ignore her." Colton whispered. Smiling, Scully walked over to the men. "Hey Mulder, Colton. I didn't know that you two were friends." The two men stared blankly at her. Then shoved her out of the way to get to their destination. *^**^* As soon as Casey recognized who was after him, he fled to his toolshed in the backyard. The back door creaked open, then it slammed shut. He knew his time was up. He had to pay up. "CASEY! WE KNOW YOU'RE BACK HERE!" Saying a quick prayer, Casey came out of his hiding spot. "All right, what do you want?" "You know exactly what we want." Mulder said icily. Standing directly in front of him, Colton punched Casey in the mouth. Casey fell back, unprepared for the blow. He paused to wipe the blood that was coming out of his mouth. "Tell me where you hid it." Colton said. "I don't know what you're talking about." Mulder's impatience grew short. Pulling the silencer he hid in his leather jacket, he pointed the gun in Casey's face. "You know your time is up. NOW TELL ME WHERE YOU HID IT!" Colton grabbed the gun away from Mulder. "You can't shoot him Mulder. Not yet." "GIVE ME THE GUN COLTON!" Mulder screamed. "NO!" Colton screamed back. Noticing that the two men before him were busy arguing, Casey deciding that now was the time to get away. Mulder was the first to notice that Casey was going to try to run for it. Gr abbing the extra Sig Sauer that Mulder hid in his ankle, he ran after Casey.= Colton raced after the two men. Casey struggled, trying to climb over the fence, when he felt someone grab his ankle and slam him back down to the ground. "Please..." Casey croaked. "Time's up Case." *^*^*^*^*^* After finding the bathroom, and washing off the rest of the margarita she spilled on herself, Scully decided that it was time to confront Mulder about his behavior. She knew Mulder was good at building up walls between them. He never let his emotions show. Only once, when his mother was on the brink of death. Seeing that the back door was open. Scully went to investigate. *^*^*^*^*^* "You idiot! You killed him!" "I did not!" "WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?" Both men spun around to see a very angry redhead facing them, hands on hips.= "Well?" She asked. The question was left unanswered because at that moment, 2 police cars showed up in the driveway. Colton decided to run for it. Police eventually found Colton, and the silencer he was carrying. *^*^*^*^*^* D.C. County Jail Interrogation Room B Tuesday, 12:47 AM "I am going to ask you this one more time agent Mulder. Are you the one who murdered agent McMurry?" Mulder put his face in his hands. "No. No I didn't. How did the cops know that there was a disturbance?" Mulder suddenly asked. "A neighbor called us, said she heard some people arguing, then a gun shot." That was all the officer said before he left the room. *^*^* Interrogation Room C "ANSWER THE QUESTION! Did you or did you not kill McMurry?" "Nope. Mulder did. I didn't have anything to do with it." The officer got right up in his face. "Then how come you were running from us? And why did we find you with a silencer?" Colton grinned. "Because, I was trying to stop Mulder from killing McMurry, besides, the bureau gave me the gun for a reason." The officer slammed the gun, incased in a zip-lock bag, on the table in front of him. "That gun is not issued to you from the FBI." Pointing to the bag as he proved his point. *^*^*^* Outside, Scully sat, filling out the rest of the forms on Mulder. A million questions were racing through her already troubled mind. Of course, all of these questions she have to ask Mulder. If not for the cops, but for her sake. She finished the form, and gave it to the secretary. Just then, the officer who was interrogating Mulder burst out of the room. "You'll have to interrogate him. He obviously will not answer my questions. Plus, he was asking for you from the start." Nodding, Scully strolled into Interrogation Room B. Sitting down, still silent, Scully waited for Mulder to speak up. Since he seemed mute, she spoke for him. "What do you have to say for yourself Mulder?" she asked softly. No reason to get angry. Not yet anyway. Mulder hung his head down. "I didn't kill Casey, Scully. No matter what those cops say, or what Colton has said." Sighing, Scully asked. "Why didn't you acknowledge me at the party then Mulder?" "I...I just didn't feel like talking to you." "Not even to say "Hi Scully"? Mulder you've been ignoring me for over 3 weeks now. You're behavior has been irrational, you're temper has gone way out of proportion you-" Mulder suddenly bolted up, knocking the chair he was sitting in to the ground. "YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT I AM GOING THROUGH SCULLY! Why don't you just leave? I don't need you." he screamed at her, pure hatred in his voice. Taken aback by his words, she said just one word before she left. "Fine." *^*^*^*^*^*^* DC County Courtroom Friday, September 10th 2:01 PM "Court has gone to order." It had been only six days since the murder of agent Casey McMurry. The suspects, Agent Mulder and Agent Colton, have still not pleaded guilty. Mulder was first to be called to the stand. He sat uncomfortably in the chair, listening to the monotone voice of the lawyer speaking to him. "Now, Mr. Mulder, can you tell me exactly what happened that day?" Mulder nodded. "I first received a call from Case- agent McMurry, asking me if I would like to go to a party of his that night. First I didn't want to go, but then Casey persuaded me." The lawyer nodded, telling him to continue. Mulder inhaled, then began again. "When I reached the party, I saw Casey and Colton fighting. I went to stop the fight, but then Casey pulled a gun on me. Saying that..." Mulder suddenly went teary-eyed, the judge asked if he'd like to stop, but Mulder pushed him away. "HE KILLED MY FRIEND!" Mulder screamed, tears now running down his face. "AND NOW I'M THE ONE BEING CHARGED WITH MURDER?" Mulder started getting choked up, and asked for a minute to regain some composure. After a couple of minutes, he continued. "Tom Colton has never been a friend of mine. In fact, a couple of years ago, I helped my partner, Dana Scully, with a case that Colton was working on. Colton threatened that he would kill me. I'm not sure why he would want to. Jealousy I guess. I knew he always had a thing for my partner." Blowing his nose, Mulder finished his speech. "And now...this whole ordeal, has caused my friendship with my partner, to dissolve." Mulder turned to the jury. "If you sentence me, you've just let the killer walk free." "That will be all Mr. Mulder," the judge said. As the jury wrote down their thoughts on Mulder's speech, Colton was seated at the stand. Placing his right hand on the bible before him, and raising his left, he swore to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but...the truth. End Part 1 ****************************************************************************= The Negotiator Part (2/2) See Disclaimer in intro. *^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^= DC Courtroom Final Verdict "I hereby pronounce that Special Agent Thomas Colton is to blame for the death of Special Agent Casey McMurry. Mr. Colton will be sent to prison for life. No bond. As for Mr. Mulder, he is tried as an accomplice in this murder. He will have to pay a $10,000 fine, and go through 2 years of probation. *^*^*^*^*^*^*^* FBI Headquarters Washington D.C. Monday, September 13th Fox Mulder stood outside Assistant Director Skinner's office. Debating whether or not to even bother going in there. He thought hastily. Skinner opened the door, expecting to see his secretary, hard at work. But what he saw only made him angry. "Agent Mulder, you either leave the premises, or I will call someone to make you leave." Skinner hissed. Mulder simply leered. "Now, Now Skinner. Is that any way to talk to a fellow agent?" "You are no longer a "fellow agent". And may I remind you; you are still on probation. If you leave, I will not tell a soul you are here." "But that's just it Skinner. I won't be leaving this office. And might I add, neither will you." Puzzled by Mulder's choice of words, Skinner searched the room for his secre tary. he wondered. Skinner craned his neck, looking to the right he saw his secretary, in a pool of blood. Her throat was cut, viciously. Almost as if someone took a chain saw to it. "Oh. My. God." Mulder smiled evilly. "Nice Skinner. I thought you'd be blowing chunks by now." Mulder pulled out a gun, while pushing Skinner back into his office. Mulder slammed the door, while still holding the gun on Skinner. "Mulder," Skinner warned. ", Whatever you may be feel-" "JUST SHUT UP!" Mulder growled. "You have no idea what I'm going through. Not you, not Scully, not the cops." "But if someone walks in my office and sees..." "They won't." Mulder interrupted again. "It's a holiday. Remember? Labor Day. I wasn't expecting you, or little miss secretary to be here. Otherwise, you wouldn't have a corpse in the next room. Now ask yourself, Skinner. What exactly are you doing here on a holiday?" "Age- Mulder. The FBI does not have holidays. We work 365 days a year. Twenty-four hours. Seven days a week. So you cannot fool be with that "everyone's off because it's a holiday" crap. Now, you will answer my question, what are you doing here?" Mulder snorted. "You're good Skinner. Actually...do you really want to know what I did with them?" Skinner nodded, afraid that his voice had already left him. "Then follow me." *^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^* X-Files office Dana Scully slowly opened the door, noticing something was missing. Of course, Scully was surprised when the guard didn't greet her. Even if it was a holiday, FBI still calls. Staring at the empty desk, which used to occupy the most brilliant man she had ever known, she realized something. Sitting in his chair, She wheeled it back. She noticed that there was a drawer, with a lock. She searched her coat, looking for her lockpick. She debated whether or not to invade Mulder's privacy. Carefully picking the lock, it finally gave in. Pulling the drawer out with ease, she gasped. Pictures taken. Of Mulder. But not just any pictures. Pictures of Mulder proudly showing off hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of cocaine. At the bottom of each picture, in a black marker, it read: HERE LIES FOX MULDER. PROUD OWNER OF THE BIGGEST DRUG DEAL OF THE CENTURY Throwing the offending pictures across the room, Scully also noted that there was a piece of notebook paper. Picking it up, she braced herself for what it read. M, Deal went off good. One off the team. Only five P's this time. Wish you were there. But knowing the partner you have, we understood. You have to pull through for us next time. CM is getting worried that the next deal will fall through. So am I. Be there at 0100 hours. CM Scully could only guess who CM was. Casey McMurry. She knew who wrote the letter. Colton. He was never good with coding. Slipping the paper into her pocket, she grabbed the photographs and prepared to leave. *^*^*^ Mulder watched as Scully dug through his life. His *real* life for that matter. He watched as she took the paper, and the photographs, and headed his direction. *^*^*^ As Scully flipped off the lights, she felt a cold metal dig into her neck. "Not a word Scully." Mulder warned. Scully immediately turned around, coming face to face with her partner. "Mulder!" Mulder reared his fist back, and punched Scully in the face. The force of his fist sent Scully crashing into the filing cabinet. Without saying a word, Mulder grabbed Scully in a fireman's hold, and proceeded to carry her up the stairs. By the time Scully came to, she was sitting by Skinner, in one of the many hallways. She could she Mulder pacing the floor. His breathing was coming in short gasps, and he was muttering something to himself. She immediately thought back to the time when Mulder had been using the type of drug. "Mulder...you need to calm down and breathe slower. You're going to hyperventilate." Choosing to ignore her, Mulder kept on pacing. Finally, after an eternity of silence, Mulder spoke. "Well, it seems that Skinner wanted to know what I did with all the bodies," Mulder said, crouching down to Skinner. "You're an inquisitive man you know. I like inquisitive people. Now, I've hacked into the security of this place. I will let you two go, but only for five minutes. Five minutes of freedom." *^*^*^* FBI Building Time Left: 3 Minutes, 37 seconds It didn't take long for Skinner and Scully to find most of the security guards and secretaries. Each body was killed the same way. Throat severed severely. "What are we going to do?" Scully suddenly asked. "What if he kills us? What if he kills himself?" "Scully calm down." Skinner assured. "We'll get out of this. He's obviously in a dark place right now." Scully snorted. "He's always in a dark place." *^*^*^*^* FBI Building Time Left: 2 minutes, 23 seconds They both found all the people, or victims now. They knew Mulder had messed with the locks. They couldn't get out. "I'll try another door." Skinner said, sweat pouring down his face from exhaustion. *^*^*^*^* Entrance of FBI Building Scully was the first to hear the noise. It eventually got louder and louder. She looked down the hallway, hoping to see Skinner. Instead, she came face to face with fate. "Time's up sweetie." Mulder smiled. "Looks like it's just you and me." "What do you mean?" Scully said confusingly. Mulder nodded his head towards one of the revolving doors. Half of Skinner's body was lying in the building, the other half outside. "HOW COULD YOU?" Scully screamed. "You killed our- MY boss! Not to mention my friends!" Mulder laughed at the sight before him. he thought. "Come on, let's take a little trip." Mulder asked, in a calm voice. Scully just stood there. Transfixed on the murderer she saw before her. Mulder's temper got the better of him (again) and he raised his gun and cocked it. "You don't want to test me right now." Scully complied, letting him take her to Skinner's office. Or what was left of it. Mulder had to room completely trashed. One chair centered in the middle of the room. A video camera placed adjacent to the chair. One table was set up near the chair. With a radio, and a telephone lying on it. The window had been taken out, shot out rather, and a light breeze floated throughout the room. "Sit." Mulder commanded. Sitting in the chair, Scully watched Mulder call someone. After Mulder finished the phone call, he turned the video camera on, and picked it up. "Smile Scully. Be happy." Mulder smiled as he faced the camera her direction. "I SAID SMILE!" Scully forced a smile, which seemed to make Mulder happy. She could already here the helicopters outside, and the phone was ringing. Urging for attention. Mulder slowly picked it up, still looking at Scully. "Yes...she's here....no....I killed them...killed him too...why?....felt like it....Well no...she doesn't feel like talking....nope...haven't hurt her... yet anyway...." As Mulder finished his conversation, Scully began to piece the situation together. Mulder seated himself on the table. "I suppose you already know what's going on here. I'm taking you hostage. I also have a few things that I would like to tell you." Scully craned her neck to look at him. "LOOK AT THE CAMERA!" he shouted. Scully returned to her previous position. "The reason for the camera is so that I can catch your reaction on tape. No, the camera is not going to be used for the cops to see. It will be for my own enjoyment. I hope this negotiation does not last long. Maybe an hour, tops." "I just have one question Mulder," Scully carefully said. She didn't want to upset him any more. Mulder nodded for her to go ahead. "Why?" she said softly. He merely smiled. "You know, I've asked myself that same question over and over again. Why? What possessed me to kill? Well, sit back, and watch the camera Scully." *^*^*^ "...So you're saying that you and Casey were in on this "project" together?" "Don't forget Colton. Oh, and its "Project X"." Mulder added. she thought. "And somehow Casey revealed your acts to the project in front of the FBI review board?" Scully asked. "Yeah. That's the only reason I made it to the party. Casey was three weeks overdue with the cocaine. Colton and I couldn't wait that long. We needed the drugs, so that we could sell it and make some money. You know that the FBI is underpaid." "How long has this gone on Mulder? And what about the X-files? And Samantha?" "The deals have gone on ever since I met Casey in college. I decided join the FBI, then later Casey would follow. Colton wasn't a part of the project until you introduced me to him. As far as the X-files goes, and Samantha, it was all a decoy. A plot to make you believe. Obviously it worked." Mulder folded his arms across his chest. His smile broadening. "You mean that my sister was killed, just because of some sort of made up decoy of yours? And what about the clones Mulder? And the so called "little green men" that inhabit the earth?" Scully's temper was flaring now. "Your sister was killed as a part of the project. The clones and Samantha are people who work within the project. And you should know by now Scully, there are no aliens." "FOX MULDER! LET THE HOSTAGE GO!" Mulder jumped off of the table, and walked to where the window used to be. "GIVE YOURSLEF UP NOW MULDER." The SWAT officer screamed into the megaphone. Mulder grabbed the radio and transmitted it to the SWAT teams current frequency. "You think I'm that stupid? To let my hostage go this quickly?" Mulder waited for a reply. He could tell that the cops were getting situated. A barrack was set out right in front of the building. Containing all sorts of surveillance cameras, wires, 2-way radios, and other forms of communications. Mulder continued. "So, where's the negotiator? Uh huh...that's what I thought. You are just going to take me out whenever you have a chance. Well, let me tell you, I don't let my hostage go, until I get a negotiation deal." He snapped the radio off and threw it across the room. Scully managed to stay quiet through the ordeal. She would just have to wait until the cops found a negotiator for Mulder's requests. That would take so me time. Considering Mulder just wiped out half of the FBI's force in DC At this point, Mulder started pacing. "Forget my requests," Mulder took the gun out of his pants and threw it to Scully. "Go ahead. Do it. I deserve it anyway. I betrayed you. I betrayed your family. I even betrayed myself. Just...get on with it." Mulder pleaded. "No...no Mulder. I'm not going to do it. No matter how much you've done to me- and trust me, right now, I'd like to kill you. But I'm not." Scully tossed the gun to the floor. (Crackle) *Mr. Mulder* Mulder angrily picked up the radio. "What?" *We're ready to negotiate.* "About time. All right. First I want full immunity, no probation, my records clear. Second, I would like to have my badge brought up. That's all I'm requesting. For now anyway." Mulder knew he was asking alot, but he knew the cops would do it. Otherwise, this nice redheaded woman in front of him wouldn't live to see another day. Hours passed by, the cops obviously thought Mulder was joking. "Am I going to have to prove to you people that I am capable of doing something rational? OKAY THEN!" Mulder tossed the radio across the room, thinking he turned it off. Grabbing the gun off the floor, he faced Scully. "Okay, either you shoot me or I'll do it myself." "No Mulder, don't do this. Why would you want to end your life? You're almost there. Almost to where you want to be...full immunity Mulder. You'll get your badge back, have your records completely wiped out." Scully pleaded with him. Maybe she could convince him to end this whole charade. Mulder suddenly burst into tears. "No...Don't you see? I hate what I've become Scully. I. HATE. IT. End of discussion. I've caused you too much pain. I've committed Lord knows how many murders in less than 24 hours. I was the key player in the biggest drug deal of the century. I'm only going to ask you once more...please...please do this...for me." Mulder stretched the gun out to her. Hoping she would take it. She shook her head 'no'. "No matter how much convincing you try Mulder, I'm not going to do it." "Then I guess you'll just have to watch." The sounds of screaming, then a gunshot were heard within a one-mile radius of the building. Mulder forgot to turn the radio off. THE END? ****************************************************************************= ****************** Author's Note: HA! Not the type of ending you expected huh? Or more importantly... not the type of Mulder you'd expect either? Please send all comments to PsychoScully14@aol.com I hadn't intended this story to be as long as it was. I might continue with this plot...that all depends on the feedback :0)
